The project entails a large-scale assessment of and planning for the health of important natural resources, known as Conservation Assets (CAs), in Florida. Conservation planning at the landscape scale provides a framework for safeguarding functional ecosystems, and their interconnected processes necessary to achieve true preservation of healthy resources. Spatially explicit data from the project informs coordination and prioritization for making conservation decisions. And suite of ecological indicators was carefully selected for each CA to represent important characteristics of each Asset and offers metrics that serve to evaluate current status, monitor trends over time, and guide conservation activities with clear measures of effectiveness of the outcomes. Results are shared routinely on the Florida Conservation Planning Atlas website (www.floridacpa.com) and periodically in a summary report card that will be available for managers and the wider public.

Connectivity is an important indicator for the Rivers and Streams Conservation Asset. Connectivity provides for natural flow processes and movements of aquatic species, for example. Connectivity can be measured somewhat indirectly by examining the number of barriers that impede connectivity. The Southeast Aquatic Regional Partnership recently released an interactive website that provides data on barriers to flow in the southeastern region. Data includes dams, culverts, and other types of barriers. Associated data include assessment of the degree of obstruction, such as whether culverts are too small and/or are blocked by debris. Projects that remove dams and clean culverts will be recorded in the interactive tool as they are completed, providing a means for demonstrating improvement. Only road-related barriers were included for these analyses, and a total of 142 road barriers were found in the state. Target was set at 10% improvement in road barriers (mainly culvert improvements or installations) for the follow-up report card in approximately 10 years.

Rivers and Streams data are from the CLC 3.3 and the National Hydrologic Dataset. The CLC provides some information on width of channels where they can be seen with satellite coverage (e.g., lack of tree cover) whereas the NHD provides extensive linear data that cannot be captured in the CLC. The indicator metric, number of miles gained by removal of barriers (dam removal, culvert widening or clearing, etc.) is summarized by HUC12 watersheds also from the NHD.

Subject: This map depicts the Rivers and Streams Conservation Asset for Florida with additional Rivers and Streams from the National Hydrological Dataset with road barriers from the Southeast Aquatic Barriers Tool. The number of miles gained through conservation action to remove obstructions are summarized by HUC12 watershed units.
