These data show the locations of Florida Shorebirds nest sites found along designated transects during the 2018-2020 monitoring years. The data are curated and maintained by the Florida Shorebird Alliance. This map was created as part of the Landscape Conservation Project for the state of Florida.
Shorebirds are an ecological indicator for the coastal uplands conservation asset of the Florida Landscape Conservation Project (LCP). The LCP entails a large-scale assessment of and planning for the health of important natural resources, known as conservation assets (CAs). The project provides a framework for safeguarding functional ecosystems and their interconnected processes required for maintaining healthy resources. Spatially-explicit data from the project, such as these, also inform coordination and prioritization among practitioners and stakeholders for optimizing conservation decisions. A suite of ecological indicators for each CA was carefully selected to represent important characteristics. Indicators offer metrics that serve to guide conservation activities, with clear measures of both needs and management effectiveness while providing the means to evaluate current status and monitor trends. Indicator results are shared routinely on the Florida Conservation Planning Atlas website (www.floridacpa.com) and periodically in a summary report card that will be available for managers and the wider public.
The Shorebird Indicator will monitor the trends in nesting pairs for three shorebirds: American Oystercatcher, Wilson's Plover, and the Snowy Plover. These species are included in the Imperiled Beach-Nesting Birds (IBNB) Plan for Florida. Indicator metrics for shorebirds are derived from annual reports on breeding pairs by IBNB regions. Data shown in this map reflect nesting site locations and may not directly match reported metrics because nesting sites may include nesting failures, renesting, etc. The fate of many nests remains unknown despite regular monitoring. This map shows nest locations for these species in each of the three years. Although each transect is repeatedly monitored throughout the breeding season, the fate of many nests remains unknown.
Transects and standardized protocols for the monitoring program were developed by FWC and have been applied to ensure that monitoring is conducted using the standardized and best available data collection methods. The data are available on the Florida Shorebird Database website (https://public.myfwc.com/crossdoi/shorebirds/about.aspx). All data were downloaded on 12/13/2020. The data are not directly spatial but include latitudes and longitudes that enable creation of spatial data, using the create X-Y events in ArcGIS 10.5 and then projected to Albers.

",
