Description: We determined the maximum extent of rice from the USDA Cropland Data Layer from 2008 - 2013, excluding individual fields of <4ha in size, based on work done by Pierluissi and King (2008). The resulting dataset was then used as an input in a neighborhood analysis to determine the proportion of rice within a 5 km circular neighorhood. Proportion of tree cover at the 1 km scale was derived from the 2001 National Land Cover Data Canopy Cover Layer. Density of ditches/streams at a 1km scale was calculated utilizing the USGS National Hydrography Dataset, after first removing classes not likely to provide suitable KIRA habitat. The 3 parameters were recoded 1-3, based on a quantile classification and multiplied to derive the initial HSI. The final HSI was displayed with a 0 to 5 ranking (with 0 the least and 5 the most suitable), based on the natural breaks function in ArcGIS.
